Importance and History of Town Twinning

The idea of town twinning was born shortly after World War Two with the aim of protecting Europe against any new war conflict. Twinning creates a unique opportunity for the citizens of European towns to meet, to get to know each other, exchange ideas, experiences and views and overcome historically conditioned prejudices and mistrust. Today, after more than sixty years, town twinning has grown into a movement linking together towns and citizens from all Europe, and indeed the entire world.
